IBPS RRB PO and Office Assistant 2026 Prelims: Exam Dates, Pattern, Syllabus and Puzzle Strategy
On this page
IBPS RRB 2026 (CRP RRBs-XV) Prelims are close. As per the official IBPS calendar, Officer Scale I (RRB PO) Prelims are on 21 and 22 November 2026 and Office Assistant (RRB Clerk) Prelims are on 6, 12 and 13 December 2026. Both posts have the same Prelims paper: 80 questions in 45 minutes, with only Reasoning and Quant, and this year each section has its own timer. For students in Maharashtra, there are two more good points: you can take the paper in Marathi, and Maharashtra Gramin Bank has posts in this cycle. This guide covers the dates, the pattern, the syllabus, puzzle strategy and a study plan.
IBPS RRB 2026 exam dates
| Post | Prelims | Mains |
|---|---|---|
| Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager / RRB PO) | 21 and 22 November 2026 | 20 December 2026 |
| Office Assistant (Multipurpose) / RRB Clerk | 6, 12 and 13 December 2026 | 30 January 2027 |
| Officer Scale II and III | No Prelims | Single exam on 20 December 2026 |
These dates are from the IBPS tentative calendar for 2026-27. IBPS will publish the call letters (admit cards) on ibps.in before each exam. Your exact date and shift will be printed on the call letter.
Vacancies, including Maharashtra Gramin Bank
The CRP RRBs-XV notification is dated 1 September 2026 (online registration ran from 1 to 21 September 2026). Its indicative vacancy tables give these numbers:
| Post | All India (indicative) | Maharashtra Gramin Bank (indicative) |
|---|---|---|
| Office Assistant (Clerk) | 8,183 | 300 |
| Officer Scale I (PO) | About 4,256 | 150 |
With Officer Scale II and III posts added, news reports put the total at about 13,700. All these numbers are indicative, and IBPS can revise them as the banks report their needs.
For Maharashtra Gramin Bank (head office in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar), the local language is Marathi. For Office Assistant and Officer Scale I, knowing the local language is an essential qualification. Having studied Marathi in standard VIII or above counts as proof. If you have not, the notification gives you six months from joining to learn it. Age limits as on 1 September 2026: 18 to 28 years for Office Assistant, and above 18 and below 30 years for Officer Scale I, with category relaxations.
IBPS RRB Prelims exam pattern 2026
The Prelims paper is the same for PO and Clerk. Only the difficulty level and the cut-off differ (the PO paper is usually a little harder).
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 40 | 40 | 25 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude / Numerical Ability | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 80 | 80 | 45 minutes |
- Negative marking: 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.
- No English section in the RRB Prelims. English (or Hindi) comes only in Mains.
- Medium: for Maharashtra, the notification offers English, Hindi, Marathi and Konkani.
- Sectional timing (new this cycle): the CRP RRBs-XV notification gives 25 minutes for Reasoning and 20 minutes for Quant. Earlier cycles had one combined 45-minute block, so time saved in Reasoning can no longer be moved to Quant.
- Prelims is qualifying. Prelims marks are used only to shortlist for Mains, and the notification says you must clear the minimum cut-off in both tests.
Mains and selection, in brief
- Mains for both posts is 200 questions and 200 marks in 2 hours, with Reasoning, Quant (Numerical Ability), General Awareness, English or Hindi, and Computer Knowledge.
- Office Assistant: no interview. Selection is on Mains marks.
- Officer Scale I: Mains plus an interview, weighted 80:20.

Puzzle strategy for RRB Prelims
Puzzles decide most RRB Prelims results. A student who can solve two or three puzzles correctly in time usually clears the Reasoning cut-off. Here is how to approach them.
1. Do the short questions first
Start the Reasoning section with inequality, syllogism, coding, direction, blood relation and series. These usually take 20 to 40 seconds each. Collect 15 to 20 marks quickly, then spend the rest of your time on puzzles.
2. Pick puzzles by type, not by order
Read the first two lines of every puzzle before you start one. Choose those with a clear structure and direct clues, for example "P sits third to the right of Q". Leave those with many conditional clues ("if", "neither", "not immediately") for the end.
3. Draw the structure before reading the clues
For linear seating, draw the line and mark positions. For a circle, draw it and mark whether people face the centre or outside. For floors, write the floor numbers from top to bottom. A fixed frame stops you from misplacing people.
4. Use definite clues first, then make cases
Place the people whose positions are fixed. When a clue allows two positions, write two cases side by side. Continue with both until one breaks a clue. Most RRB puzzles need two or three cases at most.
5. Set a time limit for each puzzle
Give a five-question puzzle about 4 minutes. If you are not close to a solution after 4 minutes, move on. A half-solved puzzle gives zero marks.
6. Practise daily
Solve at least three puzzles a day: one linear, one circular and one floor or box type. Time each one and note which type is slowest for you.
Quant strategy for 20 minutes
- Learn squares up to 30, cubes up to 20, and percentage-fraction equivalents (1/8 = 12.5%, 1/6 = 16.67%, and so on). These speed up simplification and DI.
- Solve simplification and approximation first. With practice, each takes 15 to 25 seconds.
- For number series, check differences first, then multiplication patterns, then squares and cubes.
- For quadratic equations, use the sign method to find roots quickly instead of full factorisation.
- In DI, read the units and the question carefully. Many wrong answers come from reading "percentage" as "number".
- Leave long arithmetic word problems for the end.
Should you take the paper in Marathi?
Choosing the medium is a real decision, so think about it before the call letter comes out. Some points to weigh:
- Puzzles are mostly names and positions. Language matters less here, but clue words such as "immediate right" (लगेच उजवीकडे), "neither" and "opposite" (समोर) must be crystal clear to you. If you read these faster in Marathi, Marathi will save time.
- Quant word problems. If you learnt Maths in Marathi medium up to 10th, problems on ages, partnership (भागीदारी) or simple interest (सरळ व्याज) may feel more natural in Marathi.
- Translation quality. Translated questions are sometimes longer than the English ones. In a 45-minute paper, extra reading time adds up.
- Practise in the medium you choose. Do at least a few full mocks in that medium. Switching on exam day is risky.
Many students practise mainly in English but keep the Marathi version in mind for unclear questions. If the exam interface allows you to view the question in another language, check this in the instructions on the day.
How the Prelims result is decided
- IBPS uses normalisation because the exam is held in several shifts.
- Candidates are shortlisted for Mains state-wise and category-wise, in order of merit, based on the vacancies in that state.
- The notification says candidates must clear the cut-off in both Reasoning and Quant. Plan for a safe score in each section rather than relying on one strong section.
- Cut-offs differ from state to state. Maharashtra's cut-off depends on the number of applicants and the 300 Office Assistant and 150 Scale I posts reported for Maharashtra Gramin Bank.
Study plan: 25 days to Scale I, about 40 days to Office Assistant
Officer Scale I candidates have about 25 days from 27 October. Office Assistant candidates have about 40. Use 3 to 4 hours a day.
Days 1 to 7
- Day 1: take RRB Prelims Mock Test 1. Note your score and attempts in each section.
- Quant: simplification, approximation and number series daily (30 questions each day). Revise percentage, ratio and average with topic tests.
- Reasoning: inequality, syllogism, coding and blood relation. Begin 2 puzzles a day.
Days 8 to 15
- Quant: quadratic equations, DI (one set a day), profit and loss, interest, time and work, time and distance.
- Reasoning: 3 puzzles a day (linear, circular, floor/box); direction and ranking.
- Take RRB Prelims Mock Test 2 on day 15.
Days 16 to exam
- A full mock every second day with timed analysis. Re-attempt our mocks and topic tests from the IBPS RRB test list.
- Work on your slowest puzzle type and your weakest Quant chapter.
- Office Assistant candidates: after the Scale I exam, continue the same cycle until 6 December, and start light Mains reading (banking awareness, computer basics).
- Last 2 days: revise tables, squares, formulas and your error notes only.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Starting with the first puzzle on the screen. Choose puzzles by difficulty.
- Weak calculation speed. Simplification is the easiest block in Quant. Slow calculation loses those marks.
- Too many guesses. At 0.25 per wrong answer, guessing on a whole puzzle set can cost 1 to 1.25 marks, which is often the gap at the cut-off.
- Ignoring one section. The notification requires a minimum score in both Reasoning and Quant.
- Assuming the old timing. This cycle has separate 25-minute and 20-minute blocks. Practise with the same split.
- Ignoring the local-language rule. Maharashtra Gramin Bank needs Marathi: studied in standard VIII or above, or learnt within six months of joining.
