Counterview on ‘E-books are better than real books’

I strongly disagree with the view that e-books are better than real books. No doubt e-books are cheap and can be carried in hundreds on a mobile phone, but cheapness cannot replace the joy of reading. A printed book needs no battery, no charger and no screen light, and it can be read on a train, in bright sunlight or during a power cut. Studies show that reading on a screen tires the eyes and reduces concentration, whereas the smell and feel of paper help the reader remember what he reads. Real books can be borrowed from a library, gifted, underlined and kept for years, and they do not tempt the reader with notifications or games. Interactive audio and video may entertain small children, but they turn reading into watching. For serious, undisturbed and lasting reading, therefore, the printed book is far better than the e-book.
