Lost in the Hills

It was Sunday. Anuj, along with his friends Rohan and Sameer, was going for trekking. As soon as they reached the foot of the hill, dark clouds gathered and the path disappeared in thick mist. The boys laughed and went on, but after an hour they realised that they had left the marked trail. The forest grew denser, the phone had no signal and Sameer had twisted his ankle.

Instead of panicking, Anuj remembered what the scout master had taught them — stop, stay together and look for water. They followed a small stream, tied a red scarf to a bamboo pole as a signal and shouted for help at regular intervals. Two shepherds, who were bringing their goats down the hill, heard them and led them to the village temple.

The villagers gave them hot tea and bandaged Sameer’s ankle, and a young man drove them home on his motorcycle. It was nearly nine at night when they reached home; their anxious parents hugged them with tears.

That day the three friends learnt that courage is not in going farther, but in keeping one’s head and helping one another when the path is lost.
