A Friend in Need

I had always been an average student, and mathematics was my nightmare. In the first unit test of Class X I secured just twelve marks out of forty, and I decided that I would never be able to pass the board examination. I stopped asking questions in class and began to sit quietly at the back.

My friend Rohit noticed this. He came home one evening, looked at my paper and said, “Your answers are wrong because your basics are weak, not because you are stupid.” From the next day he began to sit with me for an hour every evening. He explained each theorem with a drawing, made me solve ten sums a day and checked them patiently, and never once laughed at my mistakes.

Within two months my marks rose to thirty out of forty, and in the preliminary examination I scored seventy-eight out of a hundred. My parents could hardly believe it, and my teacher asked me what had changed. I pointed to Rohit.

Thus, my friend helped me in my academic development.
