Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends,

Today I stand before you to speak on a complaint that we hear very often — “Sports are meant for the rich only.”

It is sadly true that modern sports have become very expensive. A good cricket bat costs thousands, a pair of running shoes lakhs in the international market, and coaching camps charge fees that a farmer’s son cannot dream of. In every game, money is the main player : it buys the best kit, the best coach, the best diet and even the best exposure. The poor have neither money nor recommendation, so a talented boy from a village never reaches the district team, while a rich boy with average ability plays for the state.

This must change. I suggest that every school keep a sports fund so that no child is left out for want of money; that the government build playgrounds and provide free kits and coaching in every taluka; and that selection be made only on the basis of performance, through open trials. Sports clubs and former players should also adopt talented children from poor families.

A nation that lets money choose its players loses the very spirit of sport. Let us work for playgrounds where talent, not wealth, decides who plays.
