Counter-view on ‘It is better to follow your heart than the advice of others’

I do not agree that it is always better to follow your heart than the advice of others. It is true that people find it easy to advise, and much of the advice we receive is careless. It is also true that not everyone is our well wisher, and that we are the masters of our own fate and must learn to take our own decisions. But these very facts do not make our own heart wise.

Our heart is often ruled by impulse and desire. A student who follows his heart may give up science for a career in films and discover after five years that he had neither the training nor the opportunity. Parents, teachers and experienced friends can see what our excitement hides from us. Taking advice does not mean obeying it blindly; it means gathering the experience of others before deciding. The wise course, therefore, is to listen to those who know us and our situation, weigh their words against our own wishes, and then decide. To follow the heart alone is not courage but folly.
