In one line
In an information gap activity, each partner holds different information, so they must ask and answer questions to complete a task together.
Explained simply
Imagine you have the train timetable and your friend has the hotel booking details, and together you must plan a trip. Neither of you can finish alone; you have to talk. That 'gap' forces genuine conversation.
Technically, an information gap activity is a dialogue task in which information is split between learners. Communication becomes purposeful because the speaker has something the listener truly does not know, which is how real-world communication works.
How it works
- Pair students as A and B.
- Give different sheets: e.g. A has a table with some blanks filled; B has the other blanks filled.
- No peeking: partners may not show their sheets to each other.
- Ask and answer to fill gaps: 'What time does the Pune bus leave?' 'It leaves at 7:30.'
- Clarify and confirm: 'Did you say 7:30 or 7:13?' 'Could you spell that, please?'
- Check by comparing sheets at the end.
- Variants: spot the difference between two pictures, describe a diagram for your partner to draw, complete a map with missing places.
Quick example
Student A's sheet: Workshop, Date: 12 Feb, Venue: ?, Fee: ?. Student B's sheet: Workshop, Date: ?, Venue: Seminar Hall 2, Fee: Rs 200. A: 'Where is the workshop being held?' B: 'In Seminar Hall 2.' A: 'And how much is the fee?' B: 'Two hundred rupees. When is it?' A: 'On the twelfth of February.' Both complete their sheets through real exchange.
Common mistakes
- Showing the sheet instead of speaking, which defeats the purpose.
- Not confirming numbers and spellings, leading to errors (thirteen versus thirty).
- Using incomplete question forms ('Venue?') instead of full polite questions.
How MU asks it
Mostly a lab and term-work activity. In theory it may appear in 'Explain any two dialogue-based activities' (5 marks) or as a short note (3 marks). Define the activity, explain why the gap creates real communication, describe the steps, and add a brief example.
