In one line
An effective social media post is a short, audience-specific message with a strong first line, a clear visual, relevant hashtags and a call to action, suited to the platform.
Explained simply
People scroll past hundreds of posts a day. Your post gets about a second to make them stop. That is why the first line, the visual and the call to action matter more than a long paragraph.
Technically, social media posts are a content-creation form in the MU syllabus. Each platform has its own style: LinkedIn is professional, Instagram is visual, X (Twitter) is brief, Facebook is community-oriented.
How it works
- Define goal and audience: awareness, registrations, sales, engagement; students, professionals, customers.
- Hook first line: a question, a number, a bold statement or news.
- Keep it short: key information (what, when, where, why it matters).
- Visual: an image, poster or short video with readable text.
- Hashtags: a few relevant ones (not dozens); a branded hashtag for campaigns.
- Call to action: 'Register via link in bio', 'Comment your answer', 'Share with a friend'.
- Tone and platform fit: emojis or casual tone where acceptable; formal on LinkedIn.
- Ethics: honest claims, credit others' content, respect privacy (ask before posting photos of people), no hate or misinformation.
Quick example
Instagram post for a college robotics workshop: 'Ever wanted to build your own line-follower robot? Join our 2-day hands-on Robotics Workshop on 14 and 15 February in Lab 3. Beginners welcome, kits provided. Seats limited to 40: register via the link in bio by 10 February. #RoboticsWorkshop #EngineeringLife #LearnByBuilding'. The visual: a photo of last year's robots with the date in bold.
Common mistakes
- Writing long paragraphs and burying the key detail (date, link).
- Using too many unrelated hashtags.
- Posting without permission others' photos or content.
How MU asks it
Assessed mainly through competitions and term work. In theory it may appear as 'Write a social media post for ...' (3 to 5 marks) or within 'Explain three forms of content creation' (6 marks). Include a hook, key details, call to action and hashtags, and mention audience, platform fit and ethics.
