As of 24 October 2026, CBSE has not released the 2027 date sheet; in 2026 the exam ran from 17 February to 9 April, so the 2027 exam is expected to start in mid-February 2027. One main exam for Class 12

The two-board-exam scheme introduced from 2026 applies only to Class 10. CBSE's LOC circular of 17 September 2026 covers the Main Examinations 2027 for both classes, and only Class 10 has a separate second board exam. Class 12 students who get a compartment can appear in the supplementary exam, and students who passed in 2026 can apply as private candidates to improve their performance in 2027.

Eligibility

  • Regular candidates must be bonafide students of a CBSE-affiliated school, attend regularly and meet the attendance norms.
  • They must have passed Class 10 from a recognised school board on or before 2025.
  • Subject combinations must follow CBSE's scheme of studies; invalid combinations make the candidate ineligible.
  • Private candidates (Essential Repeat, Compartment, earlier failed candidates and 2026 pass-outs improving their performance) apply online on cbse.gov.in.

Last year's numbers

  • The 2026 Class 12 exam ran from 17 February to 9 April 2026 (52 days); the 2025 exam ran from 15 February to 4 April 2025.
  • 18,57,517 students registered, and exams were held at 7,573 centres.
  • Results were declared on 13 May 2026 with a pass percentage of 85.20%.
  • CBSE evaluated all 98,66,622 Class 12 answer books through On Screen Marking for the first time.

CBSE also said it shared the date sheet with the National Testing Agency so that JEE Main dates (2 to 8 April 2026) did not clash with board papers.

What the result is used for

Class 12 marks are needed for college admissions and for eligibility in entrance-based courses. Mark sheets, pass certificates and migration certificates are issued digitally through DigiLocker, and CBSE does not issue a hard copy of the migration certificate by default.

Tips for Maharashtra students

  • Check the subject codes on your school's LOC checklist carefully, for example Hindi Core (302) and Hindi Elective (002). CBSE allows no corrections after the LOC period.
  • If you are also preparing for MHT CET, JEE or NEET, wait for the CBSE date sheet before fixing a revision plan.
