What happened in 2026
NEET (UG) 2026 was first held on 3 May 2026 in pen-and-paper mode for nearly 23 lakh registered candidates. On 12 May 2026, NTA, with the approval of the Government of India, cancelled that exam on the basis of inputs and findings shared by law enforcement agencies, and the Government referred the matter to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Registration data was carried forward, no new fee was charged, and fees already paid were refunded.
The re-examination was held on Sunday, 21 June 2026, in pen-and-paper mode in 13 languages. According to NTA's result press release of 16 July 2026, close to 20 lakh candidates appeared at 5,440 centres in 551 cities in India and 14 cities abroad, and 11.21 lakh qualified. The highest score was 715 out of 720.
Computer-based test from 2027
On 15 May 2026, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that NEET will be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode from 2027, as reported by national media. Reports also mention multiple shifts with normalisation of scores, but NTA has not yet published an official notice with the CBT format, number of shifts, centres or dates. Treat these details as unconfirmed until the NEET (UG) 2027 information bulletin is released.

What the score is used for
NEET (UG) scores are used for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS), B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing and BVSc & AH. NTA only conducts the exam and issues the All India Rank. Counselling for All India Quota MBBS/BDS seats is run by the Medical Counselling Committee (mcc.nic.in), AYUSH All India Quota by AACCC, and state quota seats by the state authorities.
Tips for Maharashtra students
- The counselling authority for Maharashtra state quota seats, as listed in the NTA bulletin, is the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Mumbai (mahacet.org). Keep your domicile and category documents ready before counselling.
- Marathi was one of the 13 exam languages in 2026. Choose the language carefully in the application form.
- Expect the CBT change: practise full-length tests on a computer screen once NTA confirms the format.
