Consensus protocols let the nodes of a blockchain agree on a single valid order of blocks without trusting each other; the main types are Proof of Work, Proof of Stake, Delegated PoS, Byzantine-fault-tolerant protocols (PBFT and its variants), Proof of Authority, and others such as Proof of Elapsed Time and Proof of Burn.
- Proof of Work (PoW): miners compete to find a nonce so that the block hash is below a target; the winner adds the block and earns a reward. Security comes from the huge computing cost of rewriting history. Used by Bitcoin. Drawbacks: high energy use, slow (about 10 min per block in Bitcoin).
- Proof of Stake (PoS): validators lock up (stake) coins; the chance of being chosen to propose a block depends on the stake. Dishonest validators lose stake (slashing). Energy-efficient. Used by Ethereum (since 2022), Cardano.
- Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS): token holders vote for a small number of delegates who produce blocks in turn. Fast, but more centralised. Used by EOS, TRON.
- Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT): known validators exchange messages in pre-prepare, prepare and commit phases; it tolerates \(f\) faulty nodes out of \(3f + 1\) and gives immediate finality. Suits permissioned chains (Hyperledger). Variants: Tendermint (Cosmos), HotStuff, Istanbul BFT.
- Proof of Authority (PoA): a few approved, identified validators create blocks; their reputation is at stake. Fast; used in private/test networks (e.g. VeChain, some Ethereum testnets).
- Proof of Elapsed Time (PoET): each node waits a random time generated in trusted hardware (Intel SGX); the first to finish creates the block. Used in Hyperledger Sawtooth.
- Other mechanisms: Proof of Burn (destroy coins to earn mining rights), Proof of Capacity/Space (use disk space, e.g. Chia), Proof of Importance, and crash-fault-tolerant protocols such as Raft (used by Hyperledger Fabric's ordering service).
Broad classification: lottery/proof-based (PoW, PoS, PoET) suit large open networks and give probabilistic finality; voting/BFT-based (PBFT, Raft) suit smaller permissioned networks and give fast, final agreement.
