Q.3 (B) Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the given points in a paragraph format : (5 marks)

The Will to Win

If you want a thing bad enough
to go out and fight for it,
work day and night for it,
give up your time and your peace and your sleep for it
If all that you dream
and scheme is about it and life
seems useless and worthless without it
If you gladly sweat for, fret for and plan for it and lose
all your terror of the opposition for it.
If you simply go after that thing that you want with all
of your capacity, strength and sagacity, faith, hope and
confidence and stern pertinacity
If neither cold or poverty, famished or gaunt
or sickness or pain
of body and brain
can keep you away from the thing that you want,
If dogged and grim you besiege and beset it,
with the help of GOD you’ll get it!
— Berton Braley

Appreciation : The poem ‘The Will to Win’ is written by the American poet Berton Braley. The title declares its subject at once — the iron determination that makes a person go on until the goal is won. The poem is written in free verse and so has no regular rhyme scheme, but the repeated phrase “for it” at the end of the lines gives it a strong, marching rhythm. The poet uses Anaphora (line after line opens with “If”), Repetition (“for it”, “that thing that you want”), Alliteration (“strength and sagacity”, “besiege and beset”) and internal Rhyme (“sweat for, fret for”, “pain / of body and brain”). The central idea is that success is not a gift of luck but the reward of total dedication : one must work day and night, give up sleep and peace, face cold, poverty, sickness and opposition without fear, and besiege the goal “with the help of God”. The poem thus urges the reader to turn determination into achievement.
