Last year I decided to grow a mango tree from a seed. I planted the seed in a pot, watered it every day and waited eagerly, but for almost three weeks nothing happened. My younger brother laughed at me and said the seed was dead. I felt like throwing the soil away many times, but my grandfather told me to be patient and keep caring for it.

One morning I saw a tiny reddish shoot peeping out of the soil. I was overjoyed. Even then, the plant grew very slowly. During the summer holidays I had to water it twice a day instead of going out to play. When it grew bigger, I transplanted it into our garden with my grandfather’s help. Monsoon rains made it grow faster.

Today the plant is taller than me, with shiny green leaves, and birds come to rest on it. My grandfather says that in a few years it will give us sweet mangoes. Whenever I look at it, I feel proud. Waiting was hard and boring, but the result is a joy. This experience taught me that patience is bitter, but its fruit is truly sweet. Now I try to be patient in my studies too, instead of expecting quick results.
