Write a paragraph on the points in each block to get a summary of each of the four stanzas of the poem.
I: God – created man – best creation – offered blessings/gifts
II: God gifted man – beauty, wisdom, honour etc. – did not give ‘Rest’
III: Man – if happy/contented – forgets God – instead worships gifts
IV: Man needs to be reminded of the Giver – God made his life discontented – so man is lifted with a Pulley towards Him

StanzaSummary
IWhen God created man, His best creation, He had a glass of blessings beside Him. He decided to pour on man all that He could, gathering the world’s scattered riches into a small space.
IIFirst strength flowed out to man, then beauty, wisdom, honour and pleasure. When almost everything had been poured, God stopped, noticing that only rest (contentment) remained at the bottom. He did not give it to man.
IIIGod reasoned that if He gave man rest too, man would be fully content. He would then adore the gifts instead of God and rest in Nature, forgetting the God of Nature; thus both would be losers.
IVSo God let man keep the other gifts but with restless discontent. Man would be rich yet weary, and if goodness did not lead him to God, his weariness would act like a pulley and lift him towards God.
