Mary Kom was born on 24 November 1982 in Kangthei village of Churachandpur district in Manipur. Her parents were poor tenant farmers, and as a child she helped them in the fields while going to school. She was keen on athletics, and inspired by Dingko Singh’s gold at the 1998 Asian Games she took up boxing. She trained hard and, before the 2012 Olympics, sparred with male boxers in Pune and carefully gained weight through a healthy diet. She won the Manipur State Women’s Boxing Championship in 2000 and, at 18, a silver medal at the first AIBA Women’s World Championship. She is the only boxer to win a medal in all six world championships, won bronze at the 2012 Olympics and gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She has received the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna. In the future she may coach Indian women boxers. Above all, she loves being a mother.
