Wings of Fire – An Autobiography by A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (with Arun Tiwari)
Story line: The book traces Dr Kalam’s life from his childhood in Rameswaram, where his father owned boats, through his education and his early struggles, to his work as a scientist with DRDO and ISRO. It describes the SLV-3 satellite launch vehicle project and India’s missile programme, including Agni.
Social/historical context: It shows how a boy from a modest family in a small town could, through education and hard work, contribute to the scientific growth of newly independent India. It also reflects the communal harmony of his childhood surroundings.
Writing style: The language is simple and sincere. Scientific details are explained clearly, and the narrative is filled with the lessons he learnt from his teachers and mentors.
My thoughts: I found the book deeply inspiring. Kalam’s humility, his respect for his teachers and his belief that failures are steps to success touched me. I recommend it to every student who dreams big.
