Instructions for Making a UPI Payment Using a Mobile App

Purpose: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) lets you transfer money instantly from your bank account to another person or merchant using a smartphone.

You will need: a smartphone with internet, a UPI app (e.g. BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe), a bank account linked to your mobile number, and your UPI PIN.

Note: Your bank account must be linked and a UPI PIN must be set in the app before you make the first payment.

  1. Open the UPI app on your smartphone and log in using your app lock/password.
  2. Tap Scan QR to scan the receiver's QR code, or tap Pay to UPI ID/Mobile number and enter the receiver's UPI ID or mobile number.
  3. Check that the receiver's name displayed on the screen is correct.
  4. Enter the amount to be paid and, if you wish, add a short note (e.g. "Hostel fees").
  5. Select the bank account from which the money is to be debited.
  6. Tap Pay.
  7. Enter your 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN and confirm.
  8. Wait for the "Payment Successful" message and note or save the transaction ID/screenshot for your record.

Caution: Check the amount and receiver's name carefully before entering the PIN; a payment sent to the wrong person cannot easily be reversed.

Warning: Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone, and never enter your PIN to receive money; doing so can lead to fraud.
