In one line

A point-form summary lists the main ideas of a text as short numbered or bulleted points, in your own words, leaving out examples and minor details.

Explained simply

After a 40-minute lecture, your friend asks 'What did sir say?' You don't repeat the lecture; you give four or five key points. That is a point-form summary.

Technically, summarising means reducing a text to its essential content while keeping the author's meaning. In point form, each point carries one main idea, written concisely and in parallel grammatical form. The MU syllabus includes 'summarising text in point form' under reading and summarisation skills.

How it works

  1. Read the passage once for gist and once for detail.
  2. Underline the topic sentence of each paragraph and other key ideas.
  3. Remove examples, illustrations, repetitions, quotations and descriptive extras.
  4. Combine related ideas into one point.
  5. Rewrite in your own words, using short phrases or sentences.
  6. Number the points in logical order and keep them parallel (all start with nouns, or all with verbs).
  7. Add a title if asked, and check against the original for accuracy; do not add opinions.

Quick example

Passage (about 100 words) on plastic pollution says plastics take hundreds of years to degrade, harm marine life that swallows them, block drains and cause urban flooding, and that reducing single-use plastic, recycling and using alternatives such as cloth bags can help. Point-form summary, titled Plastic Pollution and Remedies:

  1. Plastics take centuries to degrade.
  2. They harm marine animals that swallow them.
  3. They block drains, causing urban flooding.
  4. Remedies: reduce single-use plastic, recycle, use alternatives.

Common mistakes

  • Copying sentences word for word from the passage.
  • Including examples or numbers that are not essential.
  • Adding your own views or information not in the passage.

How MU asks it

Asked as 'Read the passage and summarise it in points' or 'Make notes of the passage' (5 marks), often with a title. Marks are for identifying all main ideas, conciseness, own words, logical order and a suitable title. Keep the summary to about one-third of the original or the limit given.
