In one line

The one-sentence central idea is a single complete sentence that states the main message of the whole passage, answering 'What is this text mainly saying?'

Explained simply

If someone asks what a two-hour movie is about and you have only one sentence, you must capture the core, not a scene. 'A poor boy from Mumbai's slums wins a quiz show using lessons from his hard life.' That is a central idea.

Technically, the central idea (or thesis/main idea) is the overarching point that all paragraphs of the passage support. It is broader than a topic sentence of one paragraph and narrower than the general topic. The MU syllabus lists 'summarising text in one-sentence central idea'.

How it works

  1. Identify the topic: in a word or phrase, what is the passage about? (e.g. 'social media')
  2. Identify what the writer says about it: the claim, argument or message (e.g. 'harms teenagers' sleep and attention').
  3. Check the support: do most paragraphs back this claim? If not, adjust.
  4. Write one complete sentence: topic + what the writer says about it.
  5. Keep it general: no examples, numbers or minor details.
  6. Test it: could this sentence be the title expanded? Would the author agree?

Quick example

Passage: a writer explains that online classes save travel time, let students replay lectures and reach learners in remote areas, but also notes that weak internet, lack of interaction and screen fatigue reduce learning, and concludes that a blended model is best. Topic: online learning. Writer's message: has benefits and drawbacks, so a blend is best. Central idea: 'Although online learning offers flexibility and wider access, its technical and social limitations make a blend of online and classroom teaching the most effective approach.'

Common mistakes

  • Writing only the topic ('This passage is about online learning'), not what the writer says about it.
  • Choosing a detail or example as the central idea.
  • Writing two or three sentences, or a fragment without a verb.

How MU asks it

Asked as 'State the central idea of the passage in one sentence' (2 to 3 marks), usually with a comprehension or summary question. Marks are for capturing the whole passage's message accurately, in one grammatically complete sentence, in your own words.
