In one line

Coherence is the logical flow of ideas that makes a piece of writing make sense as a whole, and CSI order (Chronological, Spatial, Importance) is a set of standard ways to arrange those ideas.

Explained simply

A recipe that lists 'serve hot' before 'boil water' confuses you, even if every sentence is correct. It lacks coherence. Ideas must be in an order the reader can follow.

Technically, coherence refers to the overall logical arrangement and connection of ideas in a text. Structurally, a written piece has an introduction, body and conclusion. Within that structure, content can be organised in Chronological, Spatial or order of Importance.

How it works

  1. Structure: introduction (purpose, context), body (main points), conclusion (summary, action).
  2. Chronological order: arrange by time sequence. Use for processes, procedures, instructions, histories, accident or incident reports, minutes. Signals: first, then, after that, on 5 March, finally.
  3. Spatial order: arrange by physical position. Use for describing a place, a plant layout, an object or device, a site inspection. Signals: on the left, at the entrance, above, adjacent to, at the rear.
  4. Order of importance: from most to least important (or the reverse, to build up). Use for recommendations, reasons, persuasive writing, priority lists, news. Signals: most importantly, above all, secondly, finally.
  5. Choose the order based on purpose and reader; keep it consistent through the piece.

Quick example

A student describes the college library for a newsletter. Spatial: 'At the entrance is the issue counter. To its right is the reference section, and further ahead are the reading tables. The digital library is at the rear.' A report on a fire drill uses chronological order: '10:00 alarm sounded; 10:02 evacuation began; 10:07 all reached the assembly point.' A recommendation report uses importance: 'Most urgently, replace the faulty wiring; next, add exit signs; finally, schedule quarterly drills.'

Common mistakes

  • Confusing coherence (logical order of ideas) with cohesion (linguistic links between sentences).
  • Mixing orders randomly within one description.
  • Expanding CSI wrongly; it stands for Chronological, Spatial and Importance.

How MU asks it

Asked as 'What is coherence? Explain the CSI order of organisation with examples' (5 marks) or a short note (3 marks). Define coherence, mention introduction-body-conclusion structure, explain each of the three orders with its uses, signal words and a short example.
