Britain taxed the 13 American colonies without giving them representation in Parliament; the colonists protested ‘No taxation without representation’. The Tea Act of 1773 let the British East India Company sell tea directly in America. On 16 December 1773 colonists of Boston, disguised as Mohawk Indians, boarded the company’s ships and threw 342 chests of tea into Boston harbour. This was the Boston Tea Party.

Britain punished Massachusetts with harsh laws (the ‘Intolerable Acts’), which united the colonies and led to the American War of Independence (1775–1783).
