Q.2 (A)(3)

[Figure: square ABCD with a circle inscribed in it; the four corner regions between the circle and the sides of the square are shaded.]

In the figure given above, □ ABCD is a square and a circle is inscribed in it. All sides of a square touch the circle.

If AB = 14 cm, find the area of shaded region.

Solution :

Area of square = (____)2 ............ (Formula)

= 142

= ____ cm2

Area of circle = ____ ............ (Formula)

= \(\dfrac{22}{7} \times 7 \times 7\)

= 154 cm2

(Area of shaded portion) = (Area of square) – (Area of circle)

= 196 – 154

= ____ cm2

Best answer

Answer: Area of the shaded region = 42 cm2

Blanks, in order: side; 196; \(\pi r^2\); 42.

Area of square = (side)2 = 142 = 196 cm2.

The circle touches all four sides, so its diameter equals the side of the square: \(2r = 14\), i.e. r = 7 cm.

Area of circle = \(\pi r^2 = \dfrac{22}{7} \times 7 \times 7 = 154\) cm2.

Area of shaded portion = 196 – 154 = 42 cm2.
