Q.3 (A) Read the following extract and do the given activities : (5 marks)

A1. God bestowed many good qualities on man. Refer to the poem and list any four of them : (2)

When God at first made Man,
Having a glass of blessings standing by;
Let us (said He) “pour on him all we can:”
Let the worlds riches, which dispersed lie,
Contract into a span.

So strength first made a way;
Then beauty flow’d, then wisdom, honour, pleasure:
When almost all was out, God made a stay,
Perceiving that alone of all His treasures
Rest in the bottom lay.

For if I should (said He)
Bestow this jewel also on my creature,
He would adore my gifts instead of me,
And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature.
So both should losers be.

Yet let him keep the rest,
But keep them with repining restlessness;
Let him be rich and weary, that at last,
If goodness lead him not, yet weariness
May toss him to my breast.

Best answer

A1. Four of the good qualities bestowed on man are strength, beauty, wisdom, honour (also: pleasure and the world’s riches).

A2. If God had gifted man with ‘Rest’ as well, man would have adored God’s gifts instead of God Himself and would have rested in Nature, not in the God of Nature. He would have been so satisfied with the blessings that he would have forgotten the giver, and “both should losers be” — man would lose God and God would lose man. That is why God kept Rest in the bottom of the glass and gave man instead a “repining restlessness”, so that weariness might at last toss him to God’s breast.

A3. (iv) a b a b a.
