Using slopes, show that the points A(1, −1), B(2, 1) and C(4, 5) are collinear.
Q.2 (B)(4) Using slopes, show that the points A(1, −1), B(2, 1) and C(4, 5) are collinear.
Q.2 (B)(4) Using slopes, show that the points A(1, −1), B(2, 1) and C(4, 5) are collinear.
Best answer
Answer: Slope of AB = slope of BC = 2, so A, B, C are collinear.
Slope of AB \(= \dfrac{1 - (-1)}{2 - 1} = \dfrac{2}{1} = 2\).
Slope of BC \(= \dfrac{5 - 1}{4 - 2} = \dfrac{4}{2} = 2\).
Slopes of AB and BC are equal and point B is common to both lines, so points A, B and C are collinear.
