Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis of Solapur was one of the doctors in the Indian medical mission sent by the Indian National Congress to China in 1938, during the Sino-Japanese war.
He treated thousands of wounded Chinese soldiers on the battlefield, working day and night, and performed many operations without rest.
He married a Chinese nurse, Guo Qinglan, and died in China in 1942 while serving there.
He is remembered in China as a symbol of Indo-Chinese friendship; the film ‘Dr. Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani’ tells his story.
