Students Plant 500 Saplings in Village Drive

Satara, 5th July : Students of Vidya Niketan High School, Satara, planted 500 saplings of native trees on the hill slope near Wadgaon village on Saturday, in a tree plantation drive organised by the school’s Green Club with the help of the gram panchayat.

The drive began at 8 a.m. with a short talk by the sarpanch, Mrs Sunita Jadhav, on the importance of trees in stopping soil erosion and bringing rain. About 150 students and 20 teachers planted saplings of neem, banyan, jamun and tamarind, which were provided free by the forest department. Each class has adopted a row of plants and will water and protect them through the year.

The headmaster, Mr R. Pawar, praised the students and said the school would hold such drives every monsoon. The programme ended with the students taking a pledge to protect the environment.
