Q.3 (vii) Answer the following questions with the help of the given diagram :

[Diagram: a beaker of solution containing Ag+ and NO3– ions; a silver plate is the anode and an aluminium spoon is the cathode; both are connected to a cell.]

(a) Name the process shown in the diagram.
(b) How does this process take place ?
(c) Give two examples in which this process is used.

Best answer

Answer: (a) Electroplating (silver plating of the aluminium spoon).

(b) The electrolyte is a solution of a silver salt (silver nitrate). When current is passed, silver atoms of the anode lose electrons and enter the solution as Ag+ ions: \(\mathrm{Ag \rightarrow Ag^+ + e^-}\). At the cathode, Ag+ ions gain electrons and are deposited as a thin layer of silver on the spoon: \(\mathrm{Ag^+ + e^- \rightarrow Ag}\). The anode slowly dissolves and keeps the Ag+ concentration constant.

(c) Examples: silver plating of spoons, utensils and ornaments; chromium plating of bicycle handles, taps and car parts (also gold plating of jewellery, tin plating of iron cans).
