Metallurgy chapter test: topics
This test covers Chapter 8 of Science and Technology Part 1. It starts with the reactivity series: picking the most reactive metal and the metal that does not react with dilute hydrochloric acid. It also asks which non-metal conducts electricity. The middle questions are about getting metals from ores: the chief ore of aluminium, what froth floatation is used for, roasting a sulphide ore, and why cryolite and fluorspar are added during the electrolytic reduction of alumina. The final questions cover alloys and protection from corrosion: amalgams, the metals in bronze, and galvanising iron with zinc.
Format
- 10 multiple-choice questions, one correct option each
- 1 mark per question
- 15 minutes, no negative marking
How to use it
Take the test after learning the steps of extraction and the reactivity series. For each question, try to recall the reason as well as the answer; the board often asks "give scientific reasons" on these same points. When you review, read the explanations for the extraction questions carefully. A score below 6 means you should revise concentration methods and aluminium extraction before moving on.
