Q.2 (B) Read the following passage and do the activities : (10 marks)

B1. Fill in the blanks : (2) (i) The speaker met with a ............................... child soldier. (ii) Don’t kill your children because of ............................ (iii) The child labourer was very ...................................... (iv) All the great religions teach us to ....................... for our children.

Twenty years ago, in the foothills of the Himalayas, I met a small, skinny child labourer. He asked me; ‘‘Is the world so poor that it cannot give me a toy and a book, instead of forcing me to take a gun or a tool ?’’

I met with a Sudanese child-soldier. He was kidnapped by an extremist militia. As his first training lesson, he was forced to kill his friends and family. He asked me; ‘‘What is my fault ?’’

Friends, all the great religions teach us to care for our children. Jesus said; ‘‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to them.’’ The Holy Quran says; ‘‘Kill not your children because of poverty.’’

Friends! There is no greater violence than to deny the dreams of our children. Therefore ........... I refuse to accept that all the temples and mosques and churches and prayer houses have no place for the dreams of our children.

B2. According to the narrator, what is violence and what does he refuse to accept ? (2)

B1. (i) The speaker met with a Sudanese child soldier. (ii) Don’t kill your children because of poverty. (iii) The child labourer was very small and skinny. (iv) All the great religions teach us to care for our children.

B2. According to the narrator, the greatest violence is to deny the dreams of our children — to force a child to take a gun or a tool instead of giving him a toy and a book. He refuses to accept that all the temples, mosques, churches and prayer houses have no place for the dreams of our children; that is, he refuses to believe that religion has no room for a child’s hopes.

B3. (i) extremist militia (ii) great religions (iii) first training (iv) greater violence.

B5. In my opinion child labour is a crime against childhood. A child who works in a hotel, a garage or a bangle factory loses his school, his play and his health, and he grows up without education, so he remains poor for the rest of his life. Poverty is the chief cause — parents send the child to work because they need his small wage. The remedy is to send such children to school, to give their families help and mid-day meals, to report employers who hire children, and to remember the child labourer’s own question : “Is the world so poor that it cannot give me a toy and a book ?”
