As the clock ticked 1.38 am, the control room controller made the announcement of the start of final descent. As the lander raced down the trajectory, the scientists started clapping. Over 60 students selected from across the country and some invited from Bhutan, who were sitting behind the control room, joined the cheering crowd. Even the P.M. started clapping. There was a celebratory mood all over the ISRO complex. It seemed, India would become the first to land on Moon’s South Pole.

Suddenly, the green line denoting Vikram on the screen started deviating from the path, and at exactly 1.51 am, 13 minutes after the start of the final descent, the green line stopped moving. The celebration stopped. ISRO Chief, K. Sivan broke the bad news at 2.16 am.

A1. (i) Over 60 students selected from across the country. (ii) The ISRO Chief’s announcement plunged the whole country. (iii) There was a celebratory mood all over the ISRO complex. (iv) K. Sivan is the name of ISRO Chief.

A2. at 1.38 am — the controller announced the start of the final descent and the scientists started clapping; at 1.51 am — the green line denoting Vikram stopped moving, 13 minutes after the descent began, and the celebration stopped; at 2.16 am — ISRO Chief K. Sivan broke the bad news; PM’s entry — the PM entered the control room and consoled the scientists.

A3. (i) Ended × started (ii) Rejected × selected (iii) Last × first (iv) Began × stopped.

A4. (i) The lander raced down the trajectory, didn’t it ? (ii) The PM will start clapping.

A5. As a student I feel proud of Chandrayaan-2 even though the lander could not make a soft landing. The mission showed the skill of our scientists, who built an orbiter, a lander and a rover at a cost far smaller than that of other countries. It also taught us a great lesson — that failure is not the end : ISRO learnt from the loss and succeeded with Chandrayaan-3 four years later. The photographs and data sent by the orbiter are still useful to scientists. Chandrayaan-2 therefore makes me respect our scientists and inspires me to study science seriously.
