Two Friends, One Will

A Polio victim and a strong, but visually challenged man were friends. They wished to go to pay homage at a place of worship on the top of a hill, but each was sure that he could never climb it alone. One morning they set out together, and no one who saw them could forget the sight : the blind man carried the lame man on his shoulders, and the lame man, who could see, guided the blind man’s feet, saying “A little to the right — now straight — a stone here — stop !”

The path was steep and the sun was hot. Twice the blind man stumbled and once they both fell. They laughed, dusted their clothes and went on. Villagers came out of their houses to watch, and a group of boys followed them, cheering.

At last they reached the temple. The priest, who had seen them from afar, came to the gate and said, “Today God has come to me in two bodies.” The two friends bowed their heads, and each thanked God for the friend He had given him.

On the way home, the blind man said, “You were my eyes.” The lame man replied, “And you were my legs.” Thus the two friends taught the whole village that no one is weak if he has a friend.
