Q.3 (B) Appreciation of the poem : (5 marks) Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the points given below :

O Captain ! My Captain !

O Captain ! My Captain ! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring :
But O heart ! heart ! heart !
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

O Captain ! My Captain ! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up – for you the flag is flung – for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths – for you the shores
a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain ! dear father !
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.

My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
— Walt Whitman

Appreciation : The poem ‘O Captain ! My Captain !’ is written by the American poet Walt Whitman. The title addresses the captain of a ship that has just won a great voyage, and the whole poem is an elegy on his death. The poem has a regular rhyme scheme of aabbcded in every stanza, and the short last four lines of each stanza, with their falling rhythm, sound like a funeral march. The poet uses Metaphor — the ship is America, the fearful trip is the Civil War and the Captain is President Abraham Lincoln — along with Apostrophe (the dead captain is addressed directly), Repetition (“O Captain ! My Captain !”, “fallen cold and dead”), Alliteration (“the ship has weather’d every rack”) and Irony : the people on the shore are celebrating victory while their leader lies dead on the deck. The central idea is the poet’s deep grief at the assassination of Lincoln : the nation has won its freedom and unity, but the victory is hollow because the leader who won it is no more. The poem thus blends triumph with mourning.
