Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends,

I am standing before you today to speak on a danger that we cannot see but breathe every day — the hazards of air pollution.

Air pollution causes various diseases. The smoke of vehicles, factories and burning garbage fills our lungs with tiny particles that bring asthma, bronchitis, TB and even cancer. The reasons are easy to see : too many vehicles on narrow roads, unchecked factory chimneys, the burning of waste and plastic, and the cutting down of trees that once cleaned the air.

The effects fall hardest on children and old people, whose eyes water, whose chests wheeze and who cannot walk a kilometre without panting. Air pollution is truly hazardous : it shortens lives, spoils the crops and even changes the climate of our earth.

What can we do ? We must demand a strict ban on plastic, for burning and dumping plastic is one of the worst causes of poisonous air. The possible solutions are simple — use public transport, cycles and our own two legs; keep our vehicles serviced; plant trees; and stop burning waste. We can put up posters and banners in every street to remind people of their duty.

My own point is this : clean air is not the gift of the government but the habit of the people. Let each one of us begin today, and let our school be the first to become a “no-honking, no-plastic” zone.

Thank you.
