SMR school bagged District chess Championship

Osmanabad, 30th June : SMR School has won the District Chess Championship, defeating Saraswati Vidyalaya by four points to two in the final played at the District Sports Hall on Sunday.

The four-board final lasted nearly four hours. SMR’s captain, Omkar Deshmukh, won on the first board in forty-two moves, and Rhea Kulkarni and Sahil Pathan won their games to give the school an unassailable lead. The last two boards were drawn.

The winning team was coached by Mr A.B. Joshi, the school’s physical education teacher, who has been running a free chess class every Saturday for the last three years. “Our students practise for two hours after school and study the games of the great masters,” he said.

The Principal congratulated the team and announced that the school would send the players to the State-level championship at Pune next month. The whole school gathered in the hall in the evening to cheer the young champions.
