Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends,

Today, on our Sports Day, I want to speak about something more important than medals — sportsmanship. A true sportsman is known not by the number of prizes he wins but by the way he plays and the way he behaves.

A good player is a leader. He encourages his team, takes responsibility when the team loses and shares the credit when it wins. He gives respect to the opposing team, to his fellow players and to the officials, because without them there is no game at all. He follows the rules even when the referee is not watching, for a victory won by cheating is no victory.

He plays fair : he does not argue with the umpire, he does not insult a rival and he keeps his language clean on and off the field. If he loses, he congratulates the winner with a smile; if he wins, he does not boast. This is the spirit that builds a strong personality and a healthy body.

Friends, let us carry this sportsmanship from the playground into our classrooms and our homes. Then every game we play will make us better human beings.

Thank you. Jai Hind !
