Free Medical Camp Held in School
Shahpur, 20th June : A free medical camp was organised in the hall of Zilla Parishad High School on Saturday by the school’s Social Service Club, with the help of the Gram Seva Trust and the Rotary Club of Yavatmal.
The camp was set up because many children of the village had been suffering from cough, eye infection and skin disease after the unseasonal rains, and several families cannot afford a doctor. Twelve doctors, two nurses and thirty student volunteers examined more than four hundred patients, including women and old people from the nearby hamlets. Free medicines, spectacles and iron tablets were distributed, and a blood-test counter was also opened.
The response from the students was overwhelming. Volunteers guided the patients, kept the records and explained the dosage of the medicines to those who could not read. “I have learnt more in one day here than in a month of biology lessons,” said Rupali, a Class X volunteer.
In the afternoon the doctors held a post-camp seminar on hygiene, safe drinking water and the care of the eyes. Dr Kalpana Joshi, the chief medical officer, counselled the students about nutrition and advised them to wash their hands before every meal. The headmaster thanked the doctors and announced that such a camp would be held every year.
