Last week my elder brother returned from Pune and handed me a beautifully wrapped box for my birthday. It was tied with a red ribbon and felt quite heavy. “Open it only after the cake is cut,” he said with a wink. All evening I kept guessing — a watch, a new phone, perhaps a set of books. After the cake was cut, my friends crowded around me as I untied the ribbon and tore off the shiny paper. My heart was beating fast as I pulled at the lid. I opened the box and to my utter surprise it was empty.
