Trees are the greatest gift that nature has given to man. They give us the oxygen we breathe and take in the carbon dioxide we breathe out. Their roots hold the soil together and their leaves invite the rain, so that floods and drought are kept in check. They give us food, medicine, timber, paper and shade. Birds and animals make their homes in them, and their green calm soothes tired eyes and tired minds. Yet man cuts them down for roads, buildings and furniture without planting new ones. If we lose our trees we lose our water, our air and our future. Let each one of us plant and protect at least one tree every year — that is the best way to thank nature for its gift.
