The Cake that Tasted Sweeter

Anita was in a cake shop to buy a cake for her birthday. She saw a small beggar boy outside the shop, his nose pressed to the glass, staring at the cakes. She bought a small chocolate cake and, on an impulse, bought a second one.

Outside, she held out the second cake to the boy. He stared at her, then at the cake, and ran off without a word. Anita felt foolish and walked home slowly.

In the evening the doorbell rang. The beggar boy stood there with a paper flower in his hand and a woman behind him. “He would not eat until he had given you this,” the woman said. “It is his birthday too.”

Anita kept that paper flower on her study table for years. It taught her that giving is the sweetest part of any birthday.
