Navodaya Vidyalaya visits ‘Sahjeevan Old Age Home’
Pune, 27th February : The students and teachers of Navodaya Vidyalaya, Hadapsar, spent Sunday morning with the inmates of ‘Sahjeevan Old Age Home’ at Kondhwa, as part of the school’s community service programme.
A group of forty students, led by their Principal, Mrs V. R. Kulkarni, reached the home at nine o’clock with fruits, blankets and a small cultural programme. The students swept the garden, cleaned the rooms and helped the staff serve breakfast. Later they sang bhajans and old film songs, and some of the inmates joined in with equal enthusiasm.
Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Kulkarni said that such visits teach students to respect their elders and to understand the loneliness that old people often suffer. The manager of the home, Mr S. D. Pawar, thanked the school and said that the inmates looked forward to these visits all month.
The students also spent time listening to the residents’ stories and noted down their experiences for the school magazine. The school has decided to make the visit a monthly feature and to sponsor the medicines of five inmates for a year.
