Caught in the Rain

As I was returning from the school, it started raining heavily. I had no umbrella and no raincoat, so I ran to the bus stop and stood under its narrow tin roof with a dozen other people.

The road turned into a brown river in minutes. Cars splashed past, and a scooter stalled in the middle of the water. An old man beside me was holding a small girl on his shoulders; she was laughing and stretching out her hand to catch the drops. Then I noticed a boy of about ten, soaked to the skin, trying to push his cycle through the flooded road with a sack of books on the carrier.

I ran out and helped him lift the cycle on to the footpath. We pushed it together to a shop with a wide verandah, where the shopkeeper gave us hot tea. The boy told me that his books were for the next day’s examination and that he had been afraid of losing them.

The rain stopped as suddenly as it had begun, and a huge rainbow stood over the road. We rode home together, and I reached late — but that was the happiest soaking I have ever had.
