Q.3 (B) Appreciation of the poem : (5 marks)

Read the following poem and write an appreciation of it with the help of the points given below :

The Old Banyan Tree

At the edge of the village the old tree stands,
Holding the sky in its hundred hands;
Its roots hang down like an old man’s beard,
And it shelters all, the loved and the feared.

The weary farmer, the wandering goat,
The sparrow trying its morning note,
The children who swing from its roots and play —
It turns not a single one away.

It asks no money, it wants no praise,
It spreads its shade through the burning days;
O let me grow as the years go by
Like the banyan, generous, rooted and high.

Answer: Appreciation of ‘The Old Banyan Tree’

Title : The title of the poem is ‘The Old Banyan Tree’. It tells us at once that the poem is about a huge, aged tree.

Poet : The poem is an original poem written for this Doubtly practice paper; the poet’s name is not given.

Rhyme scheme : Each stanza has four lines that rhyme in couplets, so the rhyme scheme is aabb (stands/hands, beard/feared; goat/note, play/away; praise/days, by/high).

Figure of speech : “Holding the sky in its hundred hands” is personification — the tree is given human hands. (Also : “Its roots hang down like an old man’s beard” is a simile.)

Theme / Central idea : The banyan tree gives shelter and shade to everyone — farmers, animals, birds and children — without asking for money or praise. The poet wishes to grow up like the tree : generous, firmly rooted and great.

I like the poem because its simple images and gentle rhythm teach the value of selfless service.
