Historiography: Indian Tradition, chapter test
This test is based on the second chapter of SSC History, which covers the long tradition of history writing in India. It starts with the earliest written records of a historical nature found in India, then moves through classical and medieval works: who wrote the Harshacharit, what Kalhana's Rajtarangini is about, the historian who wrote Tarikh-i-Phiruz Shahi, and whose autobiography the Tuzuk-i-Babari is. Maratha history comes in through the Sabhasad Bakhar. The colonial period is covered by the discovery of the Harappan civilisation, the first British history of India, and Sir William Jones and the Asiatic Society. The last question is on Stripurush Tulana, regarded as India's first feminist book.
Format
10 multiple-choice questions, 1 mark each (10 marks), 15 minutes. Each has one correct answer and wrong answers are not penalised.
How to use it
Take the test after reading the chapter and noting each book with its author and period. Many of the options are real historians, so a careful reading of the question matters more than speed. After submitting, check the explanations and add any new name to your notes. If your score is under 6, revise the chapter section by section: ancient, medieval, Maratha, colonial and modern.
