Carbon Compounds chapter test

This test covers Chapter 9 of Science and Technology Part 1, a large chapter in the SSC syllabus. It checks the basics of organic chemistry: the valency of carbon, the number of covalent bonds in ethane, the general formula of alkanes, and the difference between members of a homologous series. You also need to recognise the alcohol functional group, give the IUPAC name of CH₃CH₂OH, and count the structural isomers of butane. Reaction questions ask which gas forms when ethanoic acid reacts with sodium bicarbonate and what forms when ethanol reacts with ethanoic acid (esterification). The last question asks for the monomer of polythene.

Format

10 MCQs, 1 mark each, 10 marks in total, 15 minutes. Only one option is correct and there is no negative marking.

How to use it

Attempt this after studying functional groups, nomenclature and the chemical properties of ethanol and ethanoic acid. Draw the structural formula when a question asks about bonds or isomers. After submitting, check each explanation and note any reaction you missed. If you score below 6, practise writing IUPAC names and the reactions of ethanoic acid, then retake.

More carbon compound questions are on the Science Part 1 page, and every Class 10 test is on the Maharashtra SSC exam hub.
