Periodic Classification of Elements: what the test asks
This chapter test follows how the periodic table developed, as it is taught in Chapter 2 of SSC Science Part 1. It begins with the early attempts: finding the middle mass in Dobereiner's triad of lithium, sodium and potassium, the statement of Newlands' law of octaves, and the element Mendeleev called eka-aluminium. It then turns to the modern periodic table: the modern periodic law, the number of groups, placing an element with configuration 2, 8, 2, and identifying the group of atomic number 17. The last questions are on periodic trends: how atomic radius changes down a group and across period 2, and which element in period 3 is most metallic.
Format
- 10 single-correct MCQs
- 1 mark each, 10 marks
- 15 minutes, no negative marking
How to use it
Attempt it after you can write the electronic configuration of the first 20 elements. Before answering a trend question, decide whether it is across a period or down a group. Read the explanations afterwards, since they give the reason behind each trend, and the board often asks for that reason. A score below 6 suggests revising the trends section and the placement of elements by configuration.
