Refraction of Light chapter test
This test covers Chapter 6 of Science and Technology Part 1. It starts with basics: the speed of light in vacuum and how a ray bends when it goes from a rarer to a denser medium. Then it asks about refraction in everyday life: why stars twinkle, how a rainbow forms, and when total internal reflection happens. Four questions are short numericals on refractive index: the absolute refractive index when light travels at 2 × 10⁸ m/s, the refractive index of air with respect to water, glass with respect to water, and the speed of light in water. The last question uses Snell's law for a ray incident at 60° on a medium of refractive index √3.
Format
- 10 multiple-choice questions
- 1 mark each, total 10
- 15 minutes
- Single correct option; no negative marking
How to use it
Take the test once you are comfortable with the definitions of absolute and relative refractive index. For relative index questions, write the ratio with the media in the right order before simplifying. Go through the explanations after submitting. If you score below 6, practise the Snell's law problems and the reasons behind twinkling and rainbows, which are common "give reasons" questions in the board exam.
